Am I Allowed to Leave Residential Addiction Treatment at Any Time?

Residential treatment or inpatient rehab takes place in a rehab facility and not offsite or at home. However it is possible to have communication with the world outside rehab. Depending on the rehab center’s policies you may be permitted occasional monitored day leave, or you may be unable to leave until your rehab time is up. There are few reasons to leave a rehab facility early. Your food and lodging will be provided, and any co-occurring medical or psychological conditions you may have can be treated onsite by a visiting doctor or live-in nurses. Residential rehab facilities are staffed 24 hours a day to give patients the most comprehensive treatment possible.

Residential Addiction Therapies

Most rehab facilities are equipped with the tools needed to treat its patients properly onsite. Therapies available at a residential rehab may include the following:

  • Private counseling
  • Group sessions
  • Educational workshops
  • Gender-specific therapy
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Physical activities
  • Outings or offsite therapies (such as equestrian therapy) depending on the rehab center’s policy

Visiting Hours at Residential Rehabilitation Facilities

Every rehab facility offers visiting hours. The times available may differ from facility to facility, but communicating with family and friends is seen as an important part of a successful recovery. In the first few weeks of rehab you may not be allowed to receive visitors so you can focus on overcoming your addiction. Visitors may be subject to searches and can only visit if sober themselves. Cars are usually not permitted at residential rehab facilities. Cell phones may be allowed at certain times or not at all depending on the facility. You will only need to bring clothes and toiletries, but you can bring bed sheets from home and entertainment in most cases.

Halfway Houses after Inpatient Rehabilitation

After primary inpatient treatment a halfway house can provide support without the restrictions of a residential program. These facilities are much like apartment living or boarding houses where recovering addicts can continue treatment while working to improve their lives, finding employment and transitioning to a drug-free life.

Day Leave from Residential Addiction Treatment

Organized day leave may be an option at some inpatient facilities for those who need to keep appointments or occasionally go shopping for personal items. You may need to earn day leave trips through cooperation, participation and improvement, and the rehab center may provide you with transportation to and from the facility. These rules and precautions exist to ensure you have a strong base for sobriety before facing the stress and temptation of the outside world.
