Can I Use My Phone during Inpatient Rehab?

Inpatient rehab programs are designed to help patients focus on recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. These programs offer medically supervised detox, diagnosis and treatment of any underlying mental illness, psychotherapy and individual and group counseling sessions. During your time in rehab, you will be learning about substance abuse and how your addiction developed. Counselors and therapists will help you identify addictive behaviors and unhealthy relationships in your life and provide you with new coping strategies to deal with life’s struggles without the use of drugs. The inpatient rehab environment is a place of healing, and during your stay it is important to be free from any outside distractions. While you are allowed to bring some personal items with you to most rehab facilities, other items are restricted.

What to Bring to an Inpatient Treatment Center

Upon arriving at your inpatient treatment center, you will need a picture ID, insurance card and your contact information. You will also need to provide emergency contact information of a close relative or friend, in case someone needs to be reached on your behalf. Be sure to bring comfortable clothing to the rehab center without logos on shirts or other items that refer to drugs or alcohol. Make sure to pack any prescription medications you are currently taking. You will also be allowed to bring personal care items such as shampoo, deodorant, a toothbrush, razor and shaving cream. Some items like toothpaste and mouthwash will be evaluated when you arrive, as they may contain high levels of alcohol. If this is the case, you will be provided with an appropriate alternative. Check with the intake counselor for your rehab center prior to arrival for other items you can bring.

What Not to Bring to an Inpatient Rehab Center

As a general rule, most drug rehab centers do not allow electronic devices, including cell phones, CD and MP3 players and video games. Cell phones will connect you with the outside world, and this could include contact with those who may be enabling your addiction. Other electronic devices can be a distraction and may be an unhealthy way to spend your time. Your days in rehab will be built around learning to spend your time in ways that help you heal from your addiction and promote spiritual and emotional growth. Outside food items are also not allowed in inpatient rehab centers because it is an easy way to disguise drugs and alcohol. You will be provided with a nutritious diet that will help you detox from the addictive substances and promote a healthy lifestyle.
