Joint Commission Accreditation for Addiction Treatment

Choosing an addiction treatment center doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Accreditation programs from the non-profit Joint Commission can help patients choose the right facility. The highly respected Joint Commission evaluates the quality and value of health care—it has accredited nearly 2,000 behavioral health care organizations. Founded in 1951, the Commission has evaluated addiction treatment centers since 1972.

Finding an Accredited Treatment Center

The Joint Commission makes a list of accredited treatment centers available at its website, The website allows visitors to search for facilities by name, zip code or state. In addition, accredited organizations may display a gold seal on their website. The Commission sets standards for all areas of a treatment center’s operations including the following factors:

  • Care, treatment and services
  • Environment of care
  • Emergency management
  • Human resources
  • Leadership
  • Life safety
  • Medication management
  • National patient safety goals
  • Performance Improvement
  • Record of care, treatment and services
  • Rights and responsibilities of the individual

Joint Commission Accreditation of Behavioral Health

The Commission sends trained inspectors to evaluate how well a treatment center provides care and treatment. The surveys are performed by behavioral health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, behavioral health care nurses and administrators. During the survey process, evaluators also work to educate staff members about improving treatments and services. To keep accreditation, a center must be evaluated at least every three years.
